As an educator, I am part of a group on Twitter called #ClearTheAir, founded by @ValeriaBrownEdu, where we read, discuss, and learn from each other around racism and bias in education and beyond. We read the book, A More Beautiful and Terrible History: The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History, by Jeanne Theoharis. It was so eye opening for me that I wanted to create a visual of the last chapter. I shared it with the author and she loved it! It lead to creating a similar graphic summary of her book on Rosa Parks.
Last week while struggling to find ways to contribute during this time of unrest, I decided to sell the poster in my Etsy shop and donate the proceeds to a local organization called Leaders Igniting Transformation. They work to build homegrown leadership, expanding access and opportunity, and promote an equitable society by engaging and organizing the leadership of young people.
I was able to raise over $300 so far and am getting more printed!

Tell us about the work. Why did you choose this event? How did you create the work? What outcome and impact would you like the visual community to support with sharing your work?
Visuals are a powerful way to interact with emotionally charged and complex information. They allow us to process information and create personal meaning. I created this during a panel discussion with local leaders of color and allies.
How is the civil unrest affecting you? Corry Joe Biddle of #FuelMKE 's panel discussion with Emily Phillips, David Bowen, Joaquin Altoro and Cassandra Bowers was honest, vulnerable and informative.
Takeaways for allies in the work:
-Go beyond words to ACTIONS
-Put yourself in a place where you are uncomfortable and stay there
-EDUCATE yourself instead of asking a BIPOC to bear emotional weight of doing it for you
-Come with LOVE

Tell us about the work...
I had the privilege to attend a Growing Edge Retreat one year ago and have loved listening to Parker Palmer and Carrie Newcomer’s podcast ever since. It is a balm for my soul. This episode in particular spoke to me during these uncertain times and I wanted to capture the essence of the conversation to amplify the positive message and share with others. I created this using Procreate on my iPad. I would love for the visual to help foster conversation around how we can name what exclusionary structures and systems have been in place, begin to deconstruct them in, and build new ones that serve and connect us ALL.
