The organizer of this event asked me to scribe, and I was happy to (finally) do paid work again:) It was a win-win though, because I loved the openness and sincerety of the Theology faculty and their relations, to look at themselves with a fresh look, and look beyond their own context, to the deeper values that connect us all. Also, they were open to do a collective reflection at the end, which practically meant that each participant reflected on the scribed image with 1 sentence in the chat, in the structure "I see/ I sense/ I feel". This resulted in participants showing emotions and feeling connected and inspired. The words that people shared were a valuable addition to the image and supported meaning making. So the image was an active player to support the whole group in together creating something "extra" at the end of the conference. This way it became not just my work, but a collective creation.

Why did you choose this event? How did you create the work? What outcome and impact would you like the visual community to support with sharing your work? I am passionate about data privacy. In the begging of the Covid-19 outbreak many privacy professionals warned about the dangers of creating surveillance states through Tech. This event is a panel debate between an engineer in the BlueTooth research field, that advises the Danish government, the human rights lawyer and a politician on whether a Covid-19 tracking App is a functional solution or a way to infringe on human rights and liberties. Event Home Isolation Tell us about the work... When social distancing and isolation started, I had high hopes for my self. I was going to read a tons of books, start or finish a loads of creative projects, and do something absolutely amazing with my government-sanctioned holidays. Alas! The human nature is so predictive. The honest count so far is: Me: 1 Sleep: 10 It turns out, stressful times are not the best for creativity. In stead, it is a normal physical reaction to shut down all non-essential activities and preserve energy to cope with the unknown. Fortunately, I have my visual thinking to help me find meaning in the new normal. Hope you have something too, that helps you process the unknown reality. Tell us about the work..
Last night i woke up from a nightmare. I dreamt that my upper neighbour was a fully grown circus elephant in intensive gymnastics training. I dreamt that my left-side neighbour was a hormonal teenage parrot - and a right-side neighbour an eternaly renovating handyman woodpecker. I dreamt that a group of party monkeys lived downstairs. But when i woke up this morning, I realised that those noises are just my very human neighbours. Social isolation in a densely populated apartment buildings of cities has given us ample opportunities too closely get to know each other's habits and quirks. At the time it does feel like living in a Zoo. And even though it can be hard to manage isolation, hearing very human sounds of our neighbours can also be comforting in a way. Because we all in this together. At a distance! ? especially when neighbours show kindness and care for each other. ➡️ Disclaimer: I actually have very nice neighbours in my building. In this sketch I have illustrated the accumulated experiences of my friends and me. Because, you know... neighbours - you can't live with them, and you can't live without them Chan Wai Loh cwmustardseed@gmail.com LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/chan-wai-loh-a722685/ Instagram @inkagrm URL to the original content https://www.startupgrind.com/ Tell us about the work. I am a graphic recorder form Malaysia and ever since the pandemic all events were cancelled so I ventured into digital scribing as I saw many free webinars online. This was an opportunity to practice, I came across one speaker that I had covered live last year so I live scribed this webinar and sent it to her. As for outcome & impact I would be honoured to be working with some of the people from the visual community! Event Life during Covid 19 #NewNormalArt
Tell us about the work... I have been illustrating our everyday life in Northern Ireland since we went into lockdown on 23 March 2020. I illustrate daily the latest Covid 19 news updates, our new experiences, hobbies and pastime in lockdown. My artwork is very relevant to the current situation for people across my country and worldwide. I would like people to share my #NewNormalArt illustrations to remind people that we are all in this together. I can’t help but be suspicious of how everyone seems to be looking to a vaccine as the way out of the whole COVID-19 situation. It's crucial we do find one, of course, but it's only part of the solution. As a collective, we can't just 'pop a pill' and move on. I'm hoping that visualising things like this can expose these unspoken assumptions, and help encourage people to think more broadly. Event
Open Democracy article: Degrowth: New Roots for the Economy URL to the original content https://twitter.com/prestosketching/status/1263402813477937154?s=21 Tell us about the work... For weeks now, it has been bugging me how the ‘powers that be’ just seemed to be operating under the same way of thinking as before COVID-19 struck, being so anxious to get back to the way things were before. But it’s the ‘way things we’re before’ that has given rise to the virus in the first place! And then I read this great article and call to action on Open Democracy, called ‘Degrowth: New Roots for the Economy’ (https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/oureconomy/degrowth-new-roots-economy/). It crystallised what is been thinking, and I just had to commit it to a drawing, a sketchnote. At least the first opening salvo, anyway. I wanted to raise awareness of how our growth-obsessed economy is rapacious and unstoppable... just like a virus. I sketch in Procreate on an iPad all the time, and I’ve been playing with different colour schemes, so this was a good opportunity to try a scheme that was a bit ‘serious’, without being alarmist. I think the visual community has done an amazing job globally, of inspiring each other with visual messages of optimism and encouragement. We have helped the world learn, and understand our current predicament. But I think now is the time we need to help the world understand our future predicament. And the choice me must make, and encourage our leaders to make. To not assume that the previous way is the right way. That this should be a massive wake-up call for change. Why did you choose this event? How did you create the work? What outcome and impact would you like the visual community to support with sharing your work? This map is a synthesis created over two days of the Chacruna Institute's virtual summit. Grappling with the USA's history of colonialism, conquest and long-standing practices of inflicting and perpetuating racialized trauma, we took a hard look at how the psychedelic movement can and is working to stop replicating that history, to include and elevate indigenous, POC and women's voices, knowledge and traditions, and deliver health and healing to all beings on earth. Originally I was supposed to be scribing this digitally and in person, but when it moved to a virtual event I said I'll still do it, but on the wall, the way I love to work best - a synthesis map that pushes me to the extremes of what I'm capable of internalizing, processing, and producing. Together Apart - New York Times podcast conversation with Priya Parker and Jodi Kantor URL to the original content https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaP1yCBeqBA Tell us about the work... I chose this event to find my way back into analogue scribing, after not being onsite with clients since February. And working on paper and with my whole body is even more crucial now in this 'virtual' world. Being familiar with Priya Parker's work, this conversation around connecting while apart seemed like a perfect starting point to explore the nuanced and non-digital ways that we can connect at this time. Priya told a story of Andrea Bocelli's Easter Sunday performance, and that he described it "not as a spectacle, but as a prayer." That landed in the center of the map, on the laptop screen. I hope that this is how we can use this moment, and that the technologies we rely on now to connect can also be aids in our transcendence.
