You have Questions, we may have Answers...
Why is this just happening for 30 days?
We currently find ourselves in unchartered territory with the loss of income for many of us, and at the same time the need to transition into the virtual world. There are many opportunities currently available to us that we can use to build our skills and portfolios while supporting important work during a time of change. We don’t know how long this time will last and we don’t want to condition potential future clients that we are always willing to work for free. Time-bounding this project sets a foundation, ensures a healthy practice and allows for us to transition into the virtual world.
This is a unique time where the intersection of needs are crossing and we have the ability to step up quickly to be of service. Should the need continue, we can collectively choose to extend these services. Meanwhile, in the next 30 days, we can proactively practice stating our value to our clients and build relationships with them so that in the future we might be considered and included in project budgets.
Sounds good but I'm not sure where to start, what do you suggest?
Here’s a list of upcoming virtual events. And please, help us build the list by submitting appropriate local, national and international events that you may be aware of.
You can listen to a live event or a recorded event, in some instances registering for an event gains you access to the recording afterwards.
You can approach the producers of the event in advance to pitch your services, or not. Let them know you will be scribing and will be offering them your output for their use and will be sharing it widely.
Suggest how they could use the work to further their reach:
When you complete the work, sign it with your contact information (website URL, social media handle or email) as part of the graphic..
Share the work on social media channels, be sure to list #scribeforward and include #graphicrecording and #graphicfaciliation as well as the event hashtags on Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. Ask post viewers to share the work.
Mental health care access and equity is near and dear to me. #graphicrecording the virtual summit of #volunteergroupname as they ideate for a better future. There’s a replay here: www.addressoftheevent.org #scribeforward #graphicfacilitation #mentalhealthaccess

Concerned about giving your valuable work away?
You will need to use your judgment. As a community we preserve our earning power by making sure the people who receive our services understand what the fair market value is, it is a conversation that benefits all of us in the long run.
Understandably, this can be tricky territory for visual practitioners. I can’t count how many times I have been offered an ‘opportunity for exposure’ rather than pay.
My personal decision about whether or not to donate my time is based on my availability, whether or not anyone else on the job is being paid (this includes venues, caterers, speakers, A/V team, etc.) and do the values of the event align with my values.
I am most likely to provide my work pro bono if I personally know someone connected with the event.
If the event has sponsors and I have been ASKED to donate my services, I quantify my donated services and request a sponsorship level that is in line with the monetary value of the service(s) I am providing.
If I am offering my services to an event, I would also provide value and possible exchange for the value in sponsorships if that is appropriate to the event.
